Team: Ammon Beyerle + Michelle Emma James with help from Ashly Nandong, Andrew Beyerle, Tim Derham, Damien Melotte, Nirvana, Pete Spence and Glenn Todd

Hub Melbourne was founded in mid-2010 in a heritage building, Donkey Wheel House, as a collaborative workspace-meetingspace–eventspace for people to work towards positive social change. Hub Melbourne is both a physical and virtual space for collaboration, inspiration and connection of people and ideas. It is part of the international network ‘The Hub’ in 25 cities.

Ammon met co-founder Brad Krauskopf in February 2010 and formed an ongoing contract to design Hub Melbourne from July 2010. This connection was made through working with Urban Village Melbourne Inc to secure a space in Donkey Wheel House, and Nynke Feenstra. Michelle, Ammon and Andrew first assisted Hub Melbourne with the business plan in March 2010. Led by Ammon and Michelle, the fit-out was carried out in 2 phases for 200m2: an incubator period commencing October 2010 and a full opening in February 2011.

here studio carried out a placemaking project, working as much as possible to involve maximum participation throughout the process, both in design and build. We made a blog here: www.hubmelbournedesignworkshop.posthaven.com

Michelle and Ammon were co-founders and active core team members of Hub Melbourne in the community node for design, events and placemaking during the start-up phase.
