When: May 2011 – ongoing

Client: STREAT

Location: Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, (Ground Level off Latrobe St) Melbourne

Team: Michelle Emma James + Ammon Beyerle + Peter Spence + Tim Derham

here studio met STREAT around May-June 2010 at Donkey Wheel House, during the early workshops of Hub Melbourne. After completing the design and build of The University of Melbourne site in April 2011, here studio continued to redesign Melbourne Central.

STREAT is a social enterprise, that finds homeless or at risk young people and trains them for long term employment in hospitality, through operating food and coffee ‘STREAT’ carts in Melbourne. All of the proceeds from their work go to supporting the training and support program.

Melbourne Central is their second site, after Federation Square and before The University of Melbourne. The project was to build a flagship site, for promotion of new sites and to test ideas.

In August STREAT decided to commission Six Degree Architects to take over the design of this site - which was very sad for us. "Oh well!" These are some of the best architects in Melbourne and we are excited for STREAT. As a fundraiser for the site redesign, STREAT launched a Pozible crowdfunding campaign ending 30 November 2012. They aim to raise at least $40k that will be matched by their Melbourne Central partners: The GPT Group. We hope to offer them ongoing support for their important project.
